A Milestone Year For Naga

Naga launches festival of shepherds’ tales
By Jujemay G. Awit
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

THE year 2007 is a milestone year for Naga.

Even as it became a city, it also honored its traditions by officially launching its own festival, the Pastores de Naga.

Pastores de Naga depicts the shepherds’ retelling of Joseph and Mary’s journey to find a birthing place for the Savior, according to the Christian tradition.

The story is told through songs and dances. In between songs, the presenters tell the story in a poetic manner.

Six groups from the different national high schools in the city—Naga, Tuyan, Uling, Langtad, Balirong and Pangdan—presented their version of the pastores in colorful costumes.

City of Naga Mayor Valdemar Chiong was the picture of a proud local executive when they launched the festival yesterday.

Southern push: europeans look at Cebu as investment destination

By Dave Llorito
Philippines Without Borders

IT’S a good thing that European businessmen, specifically the members of the French Chamber of Commerce, are starting to see Cebu as an investment destination, not just as an exotic place to visit. That’s an important development that our leaders in both the public and private sectors should nurture because it’s the best way to address income inequality in the country.

RP renews membership to AFECA

AFTER MORE THAN 10 years of absence, the Philippine’s meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) industry has revived its participation and membership to the Asian Federation of Exhibition and Convention Association (AFECA).AFECA is an organization of MICE industry leaders in Asia. It was organized to give Asia a voice in the MICE global industry. The Philippines is a founding-member of AFECA.

“They (AFECA members) looked for us because the Philippines is a founding-member and we were gone. Just this year, we are coming back,” said Marissa Nallana, chairperson of the Philippine Association for Conventions, Exhibit Organizers and Suppliers (PACEO).

Ms. Nallana recently attended the AFECA annual general meeting and the 2007 Asian MICE leaders forum held last September 25-27 in Taipei, Taiwan. She said the country’s revival to AFECA, through PACEO, is a joint effort of the organization and the Department of Tourism.

Capitol to buy 25-ha. Naga economic zone

CAPITOL is venturing into real estate development by buying a 25-hectare property in the new city of Naga, southern Cebu and turning it into an economic zone.

The Cebu Provincial Government will also help Naga expand its port so it can accommodate bigger sea vessels.

The port will serve as a support facility to industries that will rise in the Capitol’s planned economic zone and the existing small and medium enterprise (SME) zone of the Naga City Government.

Garcia said in a press conference yesterday that the move is in line with her inaugural message to spread development into “more friendly territories.”

Motorshow Returns to Historic Cebu

It may not be as ancient as Magellan’s expedition or Lapu-lapu’s exploits, but the humble origin of Philippine motorshows is one of the many “firsts” that have contributed to Cebu’s contemporary historicity.

In 1989, the country’s first-ever transportation show opened for public viewing in this historic place that’s known for its guitars, white beaches and friendly people. At the time, Cebu seemed the natural choice for the event due to its phenomenal economic growth then dubbed as “Ceboom.”

CEBU CITY, Philippines - The practice of engineering profession across the borders has remained the top advocacy of the Conference of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Federation of Engineering Organizations (Cafeo) as it celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

Engineer Joel J. Marciano, a member of the steering committee of the Philippine Technological Council (PTC), said that once the different engineering professions will be allowed to practice freely without any restriction within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member-countries, the Philippines would surely gain more than any other country in the ASEAN.

Marciano was referring to today’s situation where licensed engineers working in ASEAN countries are not being allowed to practice freely.
