Helping Sendong survivors this Christmas

Celebrating Christmas means sharing our love, the blessings we received this year, and our prayers not just for our loved ones and friends. Celebrating Christmas is giving to those who need our love, the blessings we received this year, and our prayers most.

This Christmas season, those who need these most are not only our poor neighbors. They include the thousands affected and who survived the wrath of typhoon Sendong (Washi) in southern Philippines.

It is heartwarming to know that Filipinos have responded overwhelmingly to calls for help and prayers. The tragedy that killed over a thousand and rendered homeless thousands more has brought out the best in us as a people.

Here in Cebu, reporters belonging to the Cebu Federation of Beat Reporters (CFBJ) used Christmas parties to raise funds for Sendong victims. CFBJ President Elias Baquero said two Cebu reporters — who will cover Gov. Gwen Garcia’s trip to Cagayan de Oro next week — plan to personally turnover the funds to their media counterparts.

PRworks Inc., in our little way to help, is now gathering aid from friends and clients to address the particular needs of journalists and bloggers affected by typhoon Sendong. (Please read related story)

Globe, PLDT interconnect in Zamboanga City (10/17/11 ROMY ELUSFA Business Mirror)

ZAMBOANGA CITY—Mayor Celso Lobregat welcomed the interconnection services between Globe and the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) here, saying it would help usher development in the city.

At an early morning meeting today with Globe officials from Manila and all over Mindanao, Lobregat, as a gesture of support for the interconnection between the two telecommunications giants in the country, bared he was inviting representatives of government line agencies to attend the ceremonial launching of the interconnection Tuesday.

From the meeting with Lobregat at the mayor’s office, Froilan Castelo, head for Corporate and Legal Services Group of Globe, said that “Zamboanga is touted to become one of Mindanao‘s biggest economic hubs with its robust ICT infrastructure.”

“After launching our Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) network in 2009 comes the successful rollout of an interconnected Globe and PLDT network. This is very timely for the city with its vision to provide and attract more business opportunities that will spur continued growth,” said Castelo.

Thanking the National Telecommunications Office [NTC] for its decision to push on the interconnection, Lobregat said he was expecting that the NTC decision would help “boost the growing information and communications technology [ICT] industry in the city.”

The interconnection was a product of a five-year negotiation that culminated with the NTC board’s order for both telecommunications giants to immediately implement the interconnection to maximize their respective services to the communities.

NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba said that “the regulatory body expects the immediate implementation of local interconnection services between Globe and PLDT to provide subscribers and business establishments with quality and more affordable telecommunication services.”

This year, the NTC paved the way to complete the interconnection between Globe and PLDT in Pampanga, Bulacan, and Zamboanga, with four more areas up for full activation before the year ends. With the completion of local interconnection, residents and business establishments, regardless of subscription, can enjoy calling each other without having to pay long-distance charges or being charged with toll rates.

Castelo said that “Globe is happy to have been part of this milestone for the people of Zamboanga. Rest assured that Globe will always be at forefront of public service and will continue to work closely with NTC and the local government units to fast track implementation of interconnection services in more areas nationwide.”

Since last April, Globe, Bayan Telecommunications and Digitel Telecommunications Philippines have been 100-percent interconnected in all areas of common presence and operations nationwide.

Nutrition Advocacy by Cebu bloggers

Click to view our National Nutrition Month 2011 photo gallery

CEBU-based bloggers have shown nutrition consciousness by helping spread the word about nutrition and breastfeeding as the Philippines celebrate National Nutrition Month 2011.

Cebu MD, a blog for Cebu physicians, wrote:

“… Unfortunately, some mothers make many excuses and others even give artificial drinks before 4 months. When I was still a medical technologist, I even saw an infant being given coffee. They probably do not know that if a baby stops suckling from a breast, that breast stops making milk which could explain why some mothers claim they are not producing milk and make it a reason why they stop breastfeeding their babies ….”

Vernon Go’s Event Geek blog helped announce in  Cebu’s online world the National Nutrition Month 2011 celebration last July 1, 2011.

Mega Philippines wrote that “Moms are heroes this Nutrition Month 2011.”

The Breaking Story Health Blog and Lic Wiki focused on Mandaue City’s decision to require companies to set up breastfeeding rooms. This development – the National Nutrition Council, Mandaue City Hall, and the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry signed a MOA during the National Nutrition Month 2011 launch at SM City Cebu – likewise earned the enthusiastic attention of the blog Breastfeeding Pinay.

Jayceeblabs, on the other hand, highlighted the formation of MIND 7 or the Media Information Network for Nutrition and Development which helped in organizing the National Nutrition Month 2011 celebration.

PRworks Online, the blog of the preferred PR agency in the Visayas and Mindanao, has been instrumental in the formation of MIND 7 in coordination with the National Nutrition Council (NNC) 7.
