The web site provides entrepreneurs with a wealth of resources and other support services online. “SME.com.ph connects you and your business to the world market the quick, easy and affordable way,” says bank officials.

Aiming to reach out to the growing number of SMEs in southern Philippines, Plantersbank demonstrate its commitment to be a relevant player in the development of the countryside.

Located some 500 kilometers south of Manila, Cebu is considered an engine of economic growth in the south largely fueled by small and medium enterprises in the export, import, IT and service industries.

PRworks Inc, with its operations based in Cebu City, has assisted Plantersbank in organizing the event and in accessing the support of the local media. Just last June, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) charted ICT collaboration in Asia during a three-day ICT conference organized by TeamAsia and its Cebu partner PRworks Inc.

The conference attended by some 75 experts from various countries in Asia gives us an idea of the advanced level of ICT development among SMEs in Cebu and surrounding communities.

Department of Trade officials said the conference pushed Cebu’s efforts to support the needs of back office services include such things as claims processing, HR management, and accounting functions.

Cebu is also considered an ideal site for such value-added services as market research and analysis, legal research and related services, and equities brokering. Cebu also offers an attractive lifestyle alternative for expatriates and knowledge workers alike, providing the benefits of living in a low-cost, tropical location without the crowding typical of larger urban areas.

The DTI attributed the industry’s high growth to the continuous expansion of early locators, the entry of new global players and their immediate ramp up, as well as greater interest in investing in the Philippines in general. It has identified seven priority ICT and BPO target sectors: contact centers, back office business process outsourcing, health information management, animation, software development, engineering design and more recently, game development.
