Your Preferred Public Relations Partner in Cebu and Southern Philippines

Public Relations in southern Philippines this 2012 (a)

Helping Honorary Russian Consul Armi Lopez-Garcia promote Philippine-Russian relations.

The Visayas and Mindanao, the central and southern islands in the Philippine archipelago, have been the public relations playing field for the Cebu-based PRworks for several years now.

Top Philippine corporations like Globe Telecom and Nokia Philippines along with small-medium enterprises like GT Cosmetics Manufacturing has precisely engaged PRworks because of its Vis-Min niche.

In Cebu and Central Visayas, we are helping several friends, corporations, and agencies like Honorary Russian Consul Armi Lopez, the San Remigio Beach Club (SRBC), the KEPCO-SPC Power Corporation (KSPC) and SPC Power Corp. (SPC), the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC), the National Nutrition Council (NNC) 7, and the Department of Tourism (DOT) 7.

As we approach the end of 2011, we begin looking into the year ahead. And we ask, what’s in store for public relations work in central and southern Philippines for 2012?

Increasing market share of online news media.

English-language community papers will increasingly feel the pressure of the increasing market share of online news media.

A growing segment of urban and provincial population is going online and spending more time in social media especially Facebook through the years. They are learning the habit of accessing news, not by buying anymore their favorite English dailies. More often, they now merely click on news shared by friends, go to search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing for more related information, or enter the online versions of their favorite community paper.

This trend has led to the emergence and growing audience of online versions of practically all community papers in major Vis-Min urban centers. This also paved the way for the rise of online news and opinion blogs and the shift of local news syndicates like Minda News to being online publications. The forward looking management of Sun.Star network of community publications has closed weak publication affiliates in the cities of Ilo-ilo, Zamboanga, and General Santos and shifted news coverage to the online Sun.Star news exchange (Sunnex).

This means the community papers will be using only the best stories – and that includes press releases and news pitches – especially with the more intense competition and declining news space. For PRworks, this means adhering to its belief that the best PR uplifts lives. Read Part B

Services sector to benefit from telco interconnection in Quezon Province

The services sector in Quezon is expected to benefit from the successful activation of local network interconnection between Globe Telecom and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) with more efficient and affordable telecommunication services.

After five years of negotiation, the two major telecom players have finally completed their network link-up in the province, following the order of National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba to fast track implementation of local interconnection services between Globe and PLDT to better serve customers.

With the completion of interconnection services between the two operators, residents and enterprises in Lucena, Candelaria, Gen. Nakar, Infanta, Lopez, Mauban, Pagbilao, Sariaya, Tayabas, Tiaong, Calauag, Dolores, Lucban, Quezon, Polilio, Real, Unisan, Catanauan, Mulanay, Pitogo, Gumaca, and Atimonan can enjoy a more cost-efficient way of communicating with each other. Over 80% of business establishments in Quezon using telecom services in their day-to-day operations belong to the services sector.

Local interconnection means that individual and corporate subscribers in a specific province or city can make calls via 7-digit local dialing without having to pay long distance charges. Without network interconnection, a Globe landline subscriber would have to pay long-distance rates to call a PLDT landline subscriber within the same area, and vice-versa.

“We are very happy that we have successfully forged network interconnection between Globe and PLDT in Quezon, as this will definitely benefit not only individual subscribers but business customers who also need quality telecom services in their operations,” said Atty. Froilan M. Castelo, Head for Corporate and Legal Services Group of Globe. “We are thankful that this initiative has finally been completed, thanks to the relentless efforts of the NTC in encouraging all parties to cooperate to serve the interest of the public, as well as the intervention of the local government of Quezon to ensure that all commitments were fulfilled.”

This year, the NTC, together with the respective local government units paved the way to complete interconnection services between Globe and PLDT in Pampanga, Bulacan, Zamboanga, Laguna, and Quezon. Globe has earlier pledged its full support and commitment to NTC to activate local interconnection in more areas nationwide to protect consumer welfare and spur continued growth of the information and communications technology (ICT) industry in the country.

Meanwhile, the networks of Globe, Bayan Telecommunications (BayanTel) and Digitel Telecommunications Philippines (Digitel) have been 100% interconnected in all areas of common presence and operations nationwide since April 2011.

Under Republic Act 7925, the NTC mandates compulsory interconnection of authorized public telecommunications carriers. This aims to create a universally accessible and fully integrated nationwide telecommunications network to encourage more infrastructure investments from the private sector that would benefit the consumers.

Jesuit-led group taps Globe for quick disaster response

With numerous typhoons hitting the country every year, quick and efficient response before, during and after emergency situations becomes a necessity.  In view of this, Globe Telecom has decided to partner with Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB), a Church-based, Jesuit-led organization, in tapping the power of mobile phones and the internet to reach out to Filipinos affected by disasters.

Through SLB’s E-Ugnay Disaster Management System, both Globe and SLB are able to take advantage of the next-level convergence of mobile and internet capabilities in consolidating information from all over the country, thereby, allowing on-ground personnel to act immediately whenever calamities strike.  The mobile and web applications were developed by students from the Department of Information System and Computer Science of Ateneo de Manila University and later on taken over by the Ateneo Java Wireless Competency Center under Fr. Charlie Cenzon, SJ.

“The potential of the internet in this field of disaster relief is largely underutilized.  On the side, the utilization of mobile phones for communication is heavy during disasters.  But without a web portal to consolidate these vital information being exchanged through the mobile phones, coordination for timely action is not possible, thus, born E-Ugnay,” said Erik John J. Gerilla, SJ, SLB Acting Director.

E-Ugnay,  an imperative “to connect” donors and beneficiaries, is the new portal for the Filipino spirit of “bayanihan” in the digital age since it allows partner organizations to send disaster assessment forms, request for relief goods and other data through a mobile phone application which will be consolidated by web-based application accessible online.  The same data, tagged with geographic location of the user, can also be sent to the E-Ugnay server via a mobile application.  The system would then save the data, organize the information geographically and display it on a map.

For instance, whatever information sent by authorized field reporters via their E-Ugnay powered mobile phones are processed by the system to track in real time the number of relief goods needed in a particular location as well as facilitate their timely delivery to affected areas.  Pictures can also be generated and published on the website (www.e-ugnay.slb.ph) for public viewing.

“We are very glad to share our ICT competencies to a civil society initiative that increases disaster resilience by improving the coordination and communication of real-time disaster information, expanding donation channels, and connecting volunteers. Through this partnership, Globe and its employees hope to be more proactive in disaster relief efforts nationwide and at the same time showcase its network resiliency and innovative ICT solutions for Disaster Risk Reduction Management,” said Rob I. Nazal, Globe Head for Corporate Social Responsibility.

Responding to SLB’s call in their 28 Sept On-line Disaster Monitoring Map, Globe provided food packages consisting of canned goods, instant noodles, rice, coffee, sugar, and milk to some 400 families seeking temporary refuge at Daanghari Elementary School in Navotas as requested by SLB.

“With this innovation, we are confident in our ability to respond to emergency situations anywhere in the country.  The system will become our main vehicle to disseminate information to our volunteers and potential donors, thereby, maximizing our limited resources during calamities and disasters.  It is also an effective way of preventing or lessening duplicate efforts among the response groups,” Gerilla said

As the official technology partner for E-Ugnay, Globe provides infrastructure support that will enable E-Ugnay to run on the Globe network consisting of a postpaid mobile account; cellphone units for the E-Ugnay team, nationwide institutional hubs, and community-based partners; specialized SIM cards with discounted rates; and a PP240,000 grant for SLB to implement its planned training activities for 2011-2012.

Globe also pledged to donate its services during disaster relief operations through employee volunteers mobilization, fundraising support and GCASH services, Libreng Tawag for victims and families of affected communities, and Libreng Internet for E-Ugnay authorized field reporters.

Set to become collaborators of Globe and SLB are action centers and academic institutions  such as:  St. Paul University- Tuguegarao City; Lourdes College -Cagayan de Oro City; Marikina People Power Volunteers- Marikina City; Ateneo de Manila University –Quezon City, Ateneo de Naga University –Naga City; Aquinas University – Legazpi City; Diocesan Pastoral Council-Catarman, Northeren Samar; Social Action Center – Diocese of Borongan; Holy Infant College – Tacloban City; Ateneo de Iloilo – Iloilo City; Sacred Heart School – Cebu City; Father Saturnino Urios University – Butuan City; Xavier University – Cagayan de Oro City; Social Action Center  – Archdiocese of Cotabato City; Ateneo de Zamboanga University – Zamboanga City; and Ateneo de Davao University – Davao City.

Globe Telecom and Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB) undertake their first joint relief operations in Brgy. Daang Hari, Navotas City, one of the hardest hit areas by Typhoon Pedring.
