Globe Telecom welcomes PLDT’s divestment of 10Mhz 3G frequency

Globe Telecom lauds Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba, Deputy Commissioners Delilah Deles and Carlo Jose Martinez of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in issuing its decision involving the PLDT-Digitel merger.
Globe head of corporate legal services group Atty. Froilan Castelo said, “The approval of the joint application with condition to divest PLDT’s 10Mhz 3G frequency is a progressive step for the NTC in promoting consumer welfare and fair competition. Given the length of time this deal has been discussed by several authorities in the government, the media, and private sector, the decision of the regulatory body upholds its support to the industry, ensuring equal opportunities among players to compete, and allowing consumers to enjoy quality services from their chosen service provider.”
Globe Telecom also notes the proactive approach of the NTC to effect local interconnection between Globe and Innove in provincial areas which benefits subscribers by lowering the cost of landline domestic calls. Globe expects the NTC to come out with a similar pro-consumer position on internet peering to help expand market opportunities in providing internet services in the country.

Globe partners with PUSOD on Taal Lake protection and conservation

From the mountains of the Cordilleras, Globe Telecom moves to expand its environment protection campaign to include Taal Lake, the country’s third largest lake which supplies up to 40% of the fish protein requirement of the Southern Tagalog region.

The drive to save Taal Lake from water pollution is being done in partnership with PUSOD, Inc., an environmental non-government organization whose mission is to protect and enhance the ecosystems of the Philippines and to show their significance to the world.  PUSOD is one of the prime movers behind the Taal Volcano Protected Landscape (TVPL) Management Plan alongside Tanggol Kalikasan, the Provincial Government of Batangas and the rest of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB).

With the partnership, Globe, through its Globe Bridging Communities, becomes the official technology partner of the Landscape Protection Management Plan of Lake Taal, leveraging on its ICT competencies and environmental protection advocacy to reach out to 13 municipalities and three cities around the lake composed of about 2,000 fisher folk, fish cage owners, and barangay captains of communities surrounding the Taal Lake basin.

“After Globe successfully delivered the second Cordillera Challenge in May, we started to scope Luzon for similar environmentally critical areas that we can support, using the Cordillera Challenge partnership model as a guide for replication.  We are thankful to be introduced to PUSOD and to be given a chance to help in protecting Taal Lake,” said Rob I. Nazal, head of Globe Corporate Social Responsibility.  Cordillera Challenge is a biking activity designed to raise funds to buy seedlings for the reforestation of denuded areas in the Cordilleras in partnership with the Cordillera Conservation Trust.

The cleanliness of the waters in Taal Lake is of prime importance not only for food safety but also for its value to water sports.  The group’s goal is to keep the waters of Taal Lake within the Class B criteria for inland waters which are being used primarily for recreation such as bathing, swimming, and skin diving, which means no heavy influx of pollutants that cannot be integrated into the ecosystem.

Right now, the lake has more nutrients than it used to have 20 years ago, thus, stricter monitoring and implementation of laws are necessary to return the lake to its previous state and ensure the balance it has had for centuries.  The fishkill in May and June has prompted a focus on water quality and has mobilized the PAMB’s committees to meet to ensure that the management plan is implemented accordingly.

Thousands of hard-core Globe Prepaid partyphile subscribers from Bacolod, Manila and nearby provinces packed the Flow Superclub Bacolod for the two-night exclusive “DON’T STOP THE PARTY” event.

Pumped up with youth energy, the young party people who came in droves to the Globe Prepaid party hardly left the multiple dance floors, loving every mix of DJ Virus, Jam Masta, DJ Nina, DJ Sonny Abad, DJ Owki, DJ AJ, DJ Rae Valdez and DJ Scarmixxed.

Globe made entrance to “DON’T STOP THE PARTY” very easy for the party-goers. They just had to buy a Globe Prepaid SIM for P20.00 and topped it up with P130.00 load to get in. Existing Globe Prepaid subscribers loaded their phones with P150 in order to get a ticket. This also entitles them to an instant welcome drink to the party.

Most of the “Don’t Stop the Party” guests came in colorful costumes in keeping with the Masskara tradition.

“It is in Western Visayas where the Globe Campus Connect project is strongest. The Campus Connect is a huge Globe project which aims to unite the students of the different colleges and universities all over the country. With the massive youth support we are getting here for the Globe Campus connect, we feel that it is only perfect to treat our youth in Bacolod with a one-of-kind party experience as they celebrate the MassKara festival. Through this party, Globe wants to express its sincerest thanks to the young people of Bacolod for their tremendous support,” says KD Dizon, Head of Globe Prepaid.

“Globe is honored to be a part of the Masskara Festival, a festival that displays Bacoleños’ resiliency and survival skills despite the adversities of the times. The festival was an opportune time for us to be able to give back to the people of Bacolod. We have kept thousands of Masskara revelers in the festive mood, upping the ante with various streetdance competitions, and clubbing experience. From start to finish, Masskara 2011 was a dazzling spectacle which showcased the Bacoleños’ inimitable talent and flair, winning raves from visitors all over. Globe, with its exciting parties, activities, and special offers, made the Masskara experience more unforgettable for all,” said Tanya Padilla, regional Sales Head for Total West Visayas.

For the first time in 32 years, the Masskara street dancers grooved and jumped to the beat of live original music, composed, scored, arranged and performed by Bacolod’s local musical talents.

The festival theme was “Celebrating the New Icons of Bacolod” in recognition of the new landmarks, institutions and personalities that have dramatically changed Bacolod from a city reeling from challenges to one that is vibrant and booming.

Globe scores another first: PH’s first terabit-level data center infrastructure for high-performance cloud services

Globe Telecom has deployed the Philippines’ first-ever terrabit-level Data Center, which gives customers more efficient and high-powered computing and communication solutions.

The company announced it has upgraded its Data Center network facilities with Cisco’s CRS-3 Carrier Routing System and the Nexus 7000 Series Switches. This upgrade connects the company’s suite of Cloud Solutions to the world with high capacity 10Gbps connections, enabled by terabit-class routing and switching through its CRS-3 routers and Nexus 7000 switches. This enhancement further ensures that applications run by Globe Business customers will not be degraded by passing through bottlenecks on the network side.

The high-powered data centers of Globe Telecom also addresses the critical requirement of network availability. The configuration of Cisco’s Nexus 7000 Series switches and the CRS-3 routers, coupled with the hardware and software features of the equipment, will result in a practically uninterrupted network in the Globe Data Center. Further, with the data center enhancements, separate and distinct virtual routers and switches can now be defined to secure different customers from each other, while still delivering high performance.

With the CRS-3 Carrier Routing System, Globe is able to efficiently scale the infrastructure and intelligently deploy converged voice, video, data and mobility services with practical savings. Moreover, it is designed to help customers increase business profitability, service flexibility and operational efficiency. Globe has also upgraded its data centers with the Nexus 7000 Series Switches because of its scalability, continuous system operation, serviceability and transport flexibility.

“These upgrades will bring the network infrastructure of our data centers to the highest levels of performance, availability and security. It will also enhance our recently-launched suite of Cloud Solutions by providing a high-performance system that allows us to scale cloud services very quickly, while maintaining flexibility and reliability,” said Jesus Romero, Head of Globe Business, the unit in Globe Telecom that serves the Philippines’ top corporate customers.

Globe Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), the company’s first venture into cloud computing, covers Backup, Storage and Compute services. These are all hosted at the Globe Data Center, where customers can get network access and solutions on-demand, and pay only for what they use. One important benefit of these cloud services, apart from the lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and higher elasticity, is high performance. This is only possible if the cloud infrastructure is designed end-to-end to deliver high performance, and the recent upgrade of the Globe Data Center facilities guarantees the customers just that.
