Globe launches Cebu Media Excellence Awards

Globe Telecom launched the first Cebu Media Excellence Awards, as a means to pay tribute and give recognition to print, broadcast and digital media practitioners who have excelled in the profession and practice of journalism. The awards were launched during the celebration of the Cebu Press Freedom Week.

Yoly Crisanto, Head of Corporate Communications of Globe Telecom said that the idea of launching the awards stemmed from the belief that sustaining journalistic excellence of journalism in Cebu promotes and broadens press freedom.

“Cebu has a rich history of journalism, which continues to this day. The Cebu Media Excellence Awards honors the rich tradition of journalism in Cebu and recognizes the men and women who continue to uphold this tradition of public service through excellent, professional and ethical media practice,” said Crisanto.

Globe Telecom has been supporting the Cebu Press Freedom Week for over a decade. On top of this, Globe has also been the presenter of the annual awards of the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP), the premier organization of print, broadcast and electronic business reporters and editors in the country.

“Media organizations and Globe Telecom have both been instrumental in transforming and enriching lives, and in this shared mission, we have also found shared values and ideals. The press can shape society with news and commentary in the interest of public service. As a public utility company, Globe Telecom has been at the forefront of providing public service through telecommunications and good corporate citizenship. We always put our customers first,” Ms Crisanto added.

Historical records indicate that the journalism in Cebu traces its roots to a weekly publication called El Boletin de Cebu. Published in 1886, it carried news and discussions of current issues that concerned not only the developing urban community, but also the whole country as well. Several of the country’s prominent political families trace their roots to ancestors who were Cebu-based journalists in the 19th century, including Don Sergio Osmeña and Don Vicente Sotto.

Today, there are about 16 AM stations in operation in Cebu City and 23 FM stations. There are about ten broadcast networks with local operations and scores of local publications, including The Freeman, Cebu Daily News and SunStar Daily. Cebu also boasts of an active digital media community of bloggers and online publications.

Cebu Media Excellence Awards (Yoly’s Message)

Prepared text of the message of Yoly Crisanto, head of Globe Telecom’s Corporate Communications, during the unveiling of the Cebu Media Excellence Awards (CMEA) on September 21, 2011 at the Harold’s Hotel in celebration of the Cebu Press Freedom Week:

Good evening friends!

I am very happy to be able to spend an evening and celebrate Press Freedom Week with all of you.

At this point, I want to share just a few words. Take note that I said “few.” I have to catch the last flight tonight because tomorrow is the opening of the PR Congress in Makati.

We at Globe Telecom came to conceptualize the Cebu Media Excellence Award because of three reasons:

One, after 17 years of celebrating Press Freedom Week, we thought our contribution should be more than mere parties though we are not doing away with it. We felt we should do something to raise the level of the celebration a notch higher.

Two, we believe press freedom can best be enjoyed and defended by pursuing media excellence.

Three, we felt media excellence can best be achieved by a continuing program to recognize superb performance.

Thus, Globe Telecom’s Cebu Media Excellence Awards seeks to enhance the culture of media excellence promoted by local stakeholders like the Catholic Church by giving due recognition for excellent media performance that enhances and broadens our exercise, access, and enjoyment of the democratic and economic freedoms.

We will be recognizing superb performance by print, radio, and television reporters for their day-to-day coverage as well as feature stories on the following areas:

a. Business/economy/finance

b. ICT/environment, disaster response/entrepreneurship

c. Youth/education/social progress

We will honor opinion writers, radio commentators, and television broadcasters for excellent writing in pursuit of social concerns and progress.

After the world entered the second decade of what we now call the information age, blogging has gained momentum and significance in social and political change. We will be giving out a Blogger of the Year award.

For 17 years, we looked forward to a week of celebrations and fellowship nights.

Starting in 2012, we will have one additional highlight to look forward to:the Cebu Media

Excellence Awards.

Nokia 700 and Nokia 701 smartphones introduce latest Symbian software update while new NFC-enabled stereo Bluetooth headset takes advantage of NFC pairing and sharing functionality

Espoo, Finland and Hong Kong – Nokia today announced the launch of two feature-packed, mass market smartphones, bringing the latest smartphone functionality at attractive price points and including market-leading innovation with Symbian Belle. The Nokia 700   and Nokia 701 extend the range of available designs, features and functionality in the Nokia Symbian smartphone range.  Symbian Belle powers both devices, with single-tap NFC technology sharing and pairing, the most personal user interface so far and a more powerful mobile Web browsing experience. As well as allowing content to be shared between devices, NFC capabilities allow any of the two new smartphones to pair with NFC-enabled mobile accessories such as speakers or Bluetooth headphones and headsets.  To extend the range of available NFC-enabled accessories, Nokia is also announcing the launch of the Nokia Essence Bluetooth Stereo Headset, which can be paired with any NFC-enabled smartphone simply by tapping the two devices together.

While both smartphones contain recognizable Nokia features, they each represent a very distinct set of priorities to allow users to choose what matters most in a smartphone. The most compact touch screen monoblock smartphone in the world (Nokia 700) and  a sleek and stylish smartphone with the world’s brightest mobile display for indoor or outdoor use (Nokia 701), all bring firsts to the Nokia product portfolio.

“After bringing exciting new features to the Symbian user experience only two months ago with Symbian Anna, we are now driving the platform even further with our most competitive Symbian user experience ever,” said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President at Nokia. “Symbian Belle and the two new handsets we are launching today show our commitment to continue delivering Symbian products that allow people to choose what is most important to them in terms of user experience, design, functionality and price.  These will not be last products or updates we will deliver on Symbian.”

“With the announcement today Nokia has made it clear that Symbian will continue to play an important role in its product portfolio along side Windows Phone 7″ said Nick McQuire IDC. “There is a sense of urgency in the way improvements and innovation are being delivered to the platform that demonstrates how committed Nokia is to make Symbian products a competitive smartphone choice.”

Nokia 701: Nokia’s brightest smartphone
The Nokia 701 is a sleek, slim smartphone incorporating the world’s brightest ever mobile phone display, based on a 3.5 inch ClearBlack display that makes it perfect for indoor and outdoor use.  It also has active noise cancellation for the clearest sound quality and, like the other new smartphones, provides single-tap NFC pairing and sharing capabilities, allowing content to be shared and sound to be streamed wirelessly to headphones and NFC-enabled speakers.

Based on the popular Nokia C7 design, the Nokia 701 smartphone also has a 1GHz processor, 8MP full focus camera with dual LED flash and 2 X digital zoom, 2nd front-facing camera and HD video capture. It comes with 8GB internal memory and the possibility to increase to 40GB by installing a 32GB microSD card.

Symbian Belle

Symbian Belle increases the number of home screens from three to six providing more room to display applications and services. Live widgets, now come in five different sizes, making the home screens come alive and giving users more flexibility to personalize the user experience. It also includes a pull down menu and taskbar to access notifications from any of the home screens and further enhancements to the Web browsing experience. All in all, Symbian Belle provides Nokia’s most competitive, seamless and intuitive Symbian experience so far.

One of Symbian Belle’s most exciting features is the single-tap NFC sharing and pairing capability. This allows contacts, videos and images to be shared with other NFC-enabled devices and smartphones, as well as pairing with NFC-enabled mobile accessoriessuch as speakers and headsets. Gaming fans also benefit from the NFC capabilities of the new handsets with the ability to unlock additional levels in Angry Birds or find a hidden blade in Fruit Ninja just by touching two NFC-enabled devices together. Globe Business expands suite of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Solutions for Enterprises

Globe Telecom, one of the leading telecommunications providers in the Philippines, delivers more innovative ICT solutions for enterprises with the recent expansion of its Machine-to-Machine (M2M) services. Offered through its Globe Business unit, the company, who is the first local telco to bring M2M services in the country, is now providing more M2M solutions that can help customers from various industries to take better control of their businesses.

With M2M, enterprises can more effectively oversee their fixed or moving resources by making their business machines communicate directly with each other. It streamlines the monitoring process, minimizing wastage and reducing operational costs. Further, the service allows them to experience real-time information exchange with minimal human intervention, enabling faster, more informed decision-making.

Globe Business’ suite of M2M solutions includes Fleet Management, Fixed Asset Management, and Security and Surveillance. Its first M2M offering, Fleet Management, has been available since 2008 and is widely-accepted in the Manufacturing, Distribution, Transport, Logistics, Freight and Petroleum industries. It is a simple and easy-to use solution that allows customers to keep track of their moving assets such as delivery vehicles with the use of GPS devices. The solution provides increased protection from theft and pilferage, contributing to a more efficient delivery system and ultimately, to business productivity.

Built on the success and experience with Fleet Management, Globe now offers other purposely-built, end-to-end M2M solutions. Fixed Asset Management is an M2M service that allows companies monitor the real-time status of their equipment’s volume and temperature threshold levels.  This minimizes wastage of temperature-sensitive goods and helps save costs with the proper predictive maintenance of business resources.

Globe’s Security and Surveillance solution, on the other hand, utilizes motion and door sensors as well as panic buttons to further enhance the security of a company’s premises.  Intruders or unauthorized personnel can be easily detected and response time to alarms can be made even faster.

As a managed service, Globe’s M2M clients are also guaranteed to receive proactive assistance on a 24X7 basis via a team that will monitor the status of all of the customer’s M2M components or devices. Clients will be provided reports via email, whether periodic or on-demand, and will also be given security assistance by conducting proper escalation of incidents to respective agencies.

According to Globe Business Head Jesus C. Romero, “We are proud to be able to offer this breakthrough to our customers here in the Philippines. Globe’s established ICT infrastructure will make it possible for enterprises to take advantage of everything that M2M technology has to offer.”

Francisco J. Claravall, who oversees Business Products and Services at Globe, added that a number of M2M application classes are currently in the works. “We will continue to expand our suite of M2M solutions in order to cater to the evolving needs of enterprises. Our goal with these innovative offerings is to make business processes faster, easier, safer and more profitable for our customers.”
