Globe supports Migrant Workers Day

Globe Telecom joined forces with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in mounting the Migrant Workers’ Day held at the SMX Convention Center recently.

The celebration convened the migrant workers sector to the 1st National Congress of OFWs, as well as their families and dependents known as OFW Family Circles, who also enjoyed various booths, livelihood fairs and symposiums.

During the event, Globe showcased some of its flagship services for OFWs and their families such as the Globe OFW Family Pack and GCASH REMIT. The Globe OFW Family Pack comes with an OFW SIM that is ready to use abroad with a pre-activated roaming service and a Family SIM which allows family members to send text messages at P1.00 per text with access to worldwidest services. Users are also entitled to free calls to the DOLE, Philippine Overseas Employment Authority (POEA) and OWWA through the 2917 hotline, an initiative of Globe and DOLE providing OFWs free access to information on jobs, livelihood programs, and other overseas employment concerns.

Another pioneering service is GCASH REMIT, an instant over-the-counter cash pick-up service which allows OFWs and their families to send and receive money using a safe and secure platform. OFW families can pick up the money from over 18,000 accredited GCASH REMIT outlets nationwide, enabling easy, convenient, and affordable money transfer from anywhere in the world.

“Globe has always been active in lending support to the initiatives of DOLE and its attached agencies POEA and OWWA for the benefit of OFWs and their families. At the same time, we continue to provide them with innovative and relevant offers that keep them connected to each other despite being miles away,” said Richie Sison, Head for Overseas Filipino Communities and Strategic Alliances of Globe.

The event was also highlighted by the formal launching of the P1-billion reintegration program for OFWs and their families initiated by President Noynoy Aquino, which contained a manifesto that outlined the issues, concerns, and recommendations of OFWs and their families with regard to their welfare and protection.

Tattoo-ed in the comfort of your own Home

In this day and age, being online is a big part of every Filipino’s lifestyle. We go online to do research, to connect with friends, to play online games, to share our favourite pictures, videos and music. But most of the time we find ourselves enduring the long wait just to download a file, wait for a video to buffer, or to load photos in an online album.

Tattoo@Home, the Globe-powered internet brand, aims to change all that and make a speedy and consistent broadband connection available to more people. Tattoo@Home gives you a host of connection types to choose from, depending on what you’re looking for.  Tattoo DSL and Tattoo WiMAX are already available to most households, while Tattoo Torque comes in selected areas for now, with a growing coverage list.

Tattoo DSL is Globe’s most economical broadband option for its price, offering a variety of speeds up to 3Mbps (megabits per second), designed for households that want a fast affordable connection that everyone in the house can share.  With Tattoo DSL, you get a broadband modem with a built-in router that makes setting up your home WiFi network a snap. Once you’re connected, you can surf the web from your desktop PC, laptop, smartphone or tablet, from virtually anywhere within your four walls.  Forget about family fights over who gets to use the internet; with Tattoo DSL, WiFi makes sharing internet your new family bonding experience.

Tattoo’s resident tech blogger Rico Mossesgeld of technogra.ph shares, “Just minutes after finishing my Tattoo DSL installation, I was already surfing the web on my PC, while downloading apps on my phone an iPad. At the same time, my parents were checking their email on their respective laptops.”

For its part, Tattoo WiMAX presents a convenient solution for homes that can’t yet be reached by wired DSL connections. Powered by the country’s first 4G broadband network, Tattoo WiMAX is available nationwide, making swift internet a reality even in areas without phone lines. Because of its plug-and-play setup, you can literally be surfing the web within minute, giving a whole new meaning to high-speed internet.

As for Tattoo Torque, this is the coveted fiber-powered internet connection which gets you surfing at high-octane speeds. Online life will never be the same with Torque’s 1Gbps capacity and its speeds of up to 100Mbps, which let you carry massive amounts of data into your home, like your top movies, music, games and whatever your heart desires.

Rico Mossesgeld explains, “Although the 100 Mbps is the theoretical maximum, my Torque connection maxed out at 94 Mbps, and even its average speeds of Tattoo Torque were breathtaking, never dipping below 70 Mbps even with a full load. This is literally the best internet connection you can get today in the Philippines.”  Tattoo Torque is currently is available at Forbes Park, Bel-Air, Urdaneta Village and Serendra Clusters D & E, with more areas to come.

You don’t need to be a tech-head to see that Tattoo@Home is the best way to stay online and always in the loop, in the comfort of your own home. This is the broadband connection you’ve been waiting for.  To know which Tattoo@Home service fits you the best, call (02) 730-1000 or log on to http://tattoo.globe.com.ph.

GLOBE Congratulates RP Men’s Rugby Team

GLOBE CONGRATULATES RP MEN’S RUGBY TEAM

Philippine Volcanoes Closes In On The Asian Top 5

Globe Telecom, a leading telecommunications provider, congratulates the Philippine men’s national rugby team, also known as the Philippine Volcanoes who recently thrashed Malaysia, a nation whose rugby tradition dates back to the 19th century, at the Asian 5 Nations Division 1 tournament in Ansan, Korea.

The final score was 86-20. The Philippine Volcanoes scored 15 tries; their opponent made one. Most of Malaysia’s points came from penalties called on the Philippine team. “We started pretty strong,” said Jake Letts, who shared scrum-half duties with James Price.

“We knew that Malaysia wasn’t going to be as strong as Korea, but we had a job to do,” added Philippine Volcanoes fullback and captain (and Jake’s older brother) Michael Letts. “We didn’t start as well as we wanted to, but we picked ourselves up and finished strongly.”

The Letts brothers were the first half-Filipinos to join the national team in 2005. This A5N team included three pairs of Fil-Aussie brothers: the Lettses, fly-half Oliver and winger Matt Saunders, and forwards Rafael and Rupert Zappia. All of them have played for the national team since the inception of A5N.

“On Wednesday it was tough to lose,” Jake recalled. The Philippines had lost to eventual champion Korea in a hotly-contested match, 20-34.  “We knew the game was ours if a couple of things had gone our way. If we’d gone into extra time the momentum would’ve been with us.

In the final, Korea defeated Singapore 58-19 to return to the Top 5 from which it had fallen last year.

The team is composed of some homegrown players and mostly half-Pinoys who live abroad. “Globe Telecom is thrilled that the athletes did so well in Korea. It is great to see the hard work pay off and the team winning at the Asian 5 nations Division 1 tournament. This is an achievement for the Philippine Rugby team and we congratulate the whole team on their victory,” declares Globe Telecom President and CEO Ernest Cu.

National team Coach Expo Mejia was not surprised at the Philippines’ lopsided victory over Malaysia. A former member of the New South Wales Waratahs coaching staff, Mejia is currently the head coach of the Village Lions in New York. He also manages Australasian Rugby, a public company which runs rugby development projects in Asia. Mejia has been the Philippine national coach since 2010.

“At next year’s A5N we’ll play Singapore in the first game, and I’m pretty sure we’ll beat them,” he predicted. “If we play the way we played here, we should be the favorites. Then we play the winner of the match between Sri Lanka (relegated from the Top 5) and Chinese Taipei (promoted from Division 2). I expect Sri Lanka to go through. Us versus Sri Lanka: it’ll be a tough game.”

Sri Lanka has the longest tradition of organized club rugby in Asia while Philippine rugby is only starting to get recognition in its own country.

Nokia shows its new strategy in action.

- Launches three new Series 40 mobile phones with advanced browser and maps
- Pinpoints July as start date for Symbian Anna delivery
- Plans up to 10 new Symbian smartphones over next 12 months
- Unveils Nokia N9 smartphone
- Announces continued support for Qt as part of ‘next billion’ strategy

Singapore – Today, at an event webcast around the world, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop demonstrated how the company is making significant progress on the new strategy it laid out earlier this year. From smartphones to mobile phones, from services to user interface design, and from improved device experiences to developer tools, Nokia outlined concrete actions for growth and taking leadership across the board.

“Earlier this year, we outlined a comprehensive strategy to change our course,” said Stephen Elop, president and CEO of Nokia. “Innovation is at the heart of our strategy, and today we took important steps to demonstrate a new pace of innovation at Nokia. It’s the beginning of a new era for Nokia.”

In mobile phones, Nokia introduced three new affordable devices – the Nokia C2-02, Nokia C2-03 and Nokia C2-06. The portfolio includes dual and single SIM options, and all three models offer a new, advanced web and maps experience for Series 40 phone users, as well as the choice of a touch screen or a keypad.

Nokia also restated its commitment to Symbian. This July, Nokia will start shipping Nokia N8s, E7s, C7s and C6-01s with the new Symbian Anna software update, which includes a number of user experience improvements. By the end of August, existing owners of these devices can also download Symbian Anna. And over the next 12 months Nokia plans to bring up to 10 new Symbian-based smartphones to market.

Nokia also revealed its latest smartphone: the Nokia N9, an all-screen device with three home views and a new user interface navigated through a simple swipe of the finger. The Nokia N9 comes in a polycarbonate design that enables superior antenna performance for better reception, better voice quality and fewer dropped calls; and a smarter all-round experience with NFC for sharing and pairing to accessories. The Nokia N9 will drive new innovation in the consumer experience, and inspire developers to build more powerful Qt applications.

The Qt framework is at the core of Nokia’s existing smartphone product line, and today there are more than 100 million Nokia Qt devices worldwide. Ovi Store consumers are downloading an increasing number of Qt applications, including in high-growth markets like Asia-Pacific. Tapping into this trend, Nokia will make Qt core to building applications that connect the next billion users to the internet. For Qt developers, this will mean a dramatic increase in reach and opportunity during the coming years.
